23rd October 2008 – DVLA sell their first online number plate

The DVLA have entered the hi-tech world of the internet by setting up a service, which allows the public to buy personalised number plates online. Of course, there has been online number plate sale for some, but this is a first for the DVLA.

The person to use the new system was Kevin Withers, aged 49 from Clacton on sea, he was in the market for a special number plate when he came across the new DVLA personalised registrations online service.

He wanted something that could show his name and possibly even his profession, but being a chiropodist, you may have thought that it could be a tall order; however, after a few minutes of imputing his initials into the system he found his ideal number plate.

At precisely 8.20 am on the 9th October, he became the first person to buy a personalised number plate through the system and his purchase KW54 TOE is now safely attached to his vehicle.

Mr Withers, said: “I just couldn’t believe how easy the on-line system was to use. In less than five minutes from start to finish, the plate was mine. Tremendous.”

He added: “I didn’t realise it at the time, but it’s always nice to be the first in anything.”

This is a continuing phase being implemented by the DVLA, they have for some time allowed vehicle owners to buy their car tax online, which has become a great success and this too looks as if it is going to follow suit.

Damian Lawson, marketing manager for DVLA Personalised Registrations, said: “While our telesales scheme has stood a great test of time, with more and more people becoming internet-literate, being able to buy direct online is certainly the future.”
