It is not every day that you see a rare and expensive number plate on a Ford Escort, but that does not mean that it cannot happen, for Russell Baldwin it is just normal that he has the CR 7 private number plate on his £300 car.
A while ago it was being said that Manchester United and Portugal football star Christiano Ronaldo had offered the previous owner, something in the region of £150,000 for the number plate, but this appears not to have happened, this is where the current owner stepped in and paid a five figure sum for it.
CR 7 is the footballer’s favourite number; this is because it represents his initials and squad number. Ronaldo even owns a boutique in Portugal called CR7, so there are possibilities there for a deal, but only if the price is right for the star who has recently wrecked his new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorino worth around £200,000.
Therefore, with the insurance payout he could well afford the number plate and still have enough change left over to pay for the transfer to his new Bentley GT and maybe the odd night out or two.
Mr Baldwin, from Buckinghamshire, said: ‘There is a perception that Ronaldo owns the plate and he doesn’t.
‘When I went to see Charlie to get two other plates he mentioned he still had CR7.
‘He said Ronaldo was going to buy it but he hadn’t, so I bought all three.
‘It is an old and interesting plate, which was first registered in 1903. I’ve put it up for sale and had a phone call from someone who said ‘that is Ronaldo’s plate’. It’s not, but if he is still interested he can buy it if he wants it.’
