Cops tell me there's a huge number of blank stolen V5C registration documents in the hands of organised crime gangs.

In 2006 a batch with printing faults were sent for shredding, but nobody will say how many went missing. So far nearly 1,000 have surfaced, with over 500 being used in scams totalling £4million.

If you buy a car with one of these documents, which are effectively legitimate, but with fraudulent details filled in, you've no protection in law, and will lose all your money.

Your only defence is to check the unique document number. They run from BG8229501 to BG9999030 and BI 2305501-BI2800000. The mathematicians among you will haveworked out that those numbers add up to over two million. If you're in any doubt - some of the serial numbers have been altered already - call the DVLA helpline on 0870 2411878.
