" Latest technology used to target dodgy drivers "
AN operation to target law-breaking motorists
in Newcastle by using the latest technology will be rolled out forcewide.
Operation Magnitude, which ran in the city
between January and March last year, saw Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
cameras deployed at sites across the city in a bid to target people using
uninsured and unlicensed vehicles.
The hi-tech system scans number plates and
matches them against a database to identify vehicles of interest and get them
intercepted by an officer on the ground.
Chief Inspector Mick Lillico, of Newcastle
Area Command, said: "It's a well-known fact those who drive in uninsured and
untaxed vehicles have a greater chance of being involved in other criminal
activity.
"This intelligence-led operation is all about
denying criminals use of the roads and reducing the number of casualties. We've
carried out this operation twice in Newcastle and both times it's been
successful.
"Now the sceme will be evaluated and once we
have a new computer system in place, hopefully later this year, it will be
rolled out across the force.
"This means law-breaking motorists across
Northumbria will be targeted and denied the use of the roads. Although it's only
a small minority of motorists who drive illegally we are determined to tackle
the them."
The first three-month operation yielded good
results, with 338 vehicles seized and 46 arrests made for offences including
drink driving, theft of motor vehicles and drugs offences. In many cases the
seized vehicles were crushed.
Operation Magnitude returned last month for
four weeks, with ANPR devices being used at random times and locations across
the city. This time 69 vehicles were seized and six arrest were made, while
there were 72 summonses and 21 tickets issued for driving offences.
This time officers from the five other area
commands observed the Newcastle initiative in preparation for the successful
scheme being rolled out across the force.
A new independent computer system will be
installed to support the anticipated increase in the volume of stops and ensure
the scheme can be carried out in every area command year-round.
Police use legislation under the Serious and
Organised Crime Act (SOCA) to take away cars whose owners do not have valid
documentation.
Information about wanted people and those who
drive illegally is fed into the ANPR system while disqualified drivers are
automatically included from details given by the courts.
The owners of uplifted vehicles face a £112
removal charge plus £10 a day storage costs. Proof of ownership and a valid
insurance certificate must be presented to police before they can get their
vehicle back.
