" Licence plate overhaul could give drivers choices "
Albertans could soon have some new decorative
accents for their vehicles, as the government department reviewing provincial
licence plates is recommending motorists have a variety of tags to choose from
-- but balked at reintroducing a front plate.
Service Alberta Minister Heather Klimchuk said
Tuesday she will recommend to government caucus what 33,000 Albertans asked for
in an online survey: they are fiercely opposed to a front plate and want more
options instead of a uniform standard.
For drivers, that could mean different plate
designs and mottos to choose from, similar to what's available in some other
provinces and states.
"There will be a number of recommendations
that will be going to caucus and that's one of them," Klimchuk said.
"There's all sorts of different choices out
there," she added. "Everything is on the table."
However, reintroducing the front plate was
overwhelmingly opposed by Albertans, she said, and won't be included in the
recommendations.
Organizations and institutions -- such as the
Calgary Flames, Calgary Stampeders and the University of Calgary -- may be able
to sponsor licence plates, if Tory MLAs give the idea the green light, noted
Service Alberta spokesman Cam Traynor.
Motorists could proudly sport the team or
school logos on their tags, with a small portion of the revenue possibly going
back to the organizations.
"It's up to the (government) caucus to
decide," Traynor said.
The province will likely roll out some of the
licence plate initiatives by June, although a final announcement on new styles
and mottos isn't expected until later in the summer.
The thought of slapping an NHL team logo on a
plate -- which is already permitted in provinces like Ontario -- is welcomed by
the Calgary Flames, which would like to see their fans have the option of
expressing their team loyalty in a new manner.
"It is an idea we would be interested in,"
said Peter Hanlon, vice-president of communications for the Flames.
Alberta's three-letter, three-digit plates
feature red numbers on a white background, with a floral graphic and the slogan
Wild Rose Country. It was created about 25 years ago, making it one of the
oldest plate designs in North America.
Some of the new designs being considered
include a visual theme of mountains, prairie and city landscapes, wildlife and
oilfields. The slogan Wild Rose Country could be replaced with Strong and Free
-- the provincial motto -- or something else entirely.
