" Number of CCTV cameras in Calderdale set to double "
FIFTY more CCTV cameras will be installed
across Calderdale - doubling the current number.
Their state-of-the-art digital pictures will
be beamed to a new control centre in the £500,000 scheme.
It will also be linked to an automatic number
plate recognition system, to help clamp down on car crime. Calderdale Council's
head of community support and housing, Mark Thompson, said: "The aim is to get
the new control room operational by July."
There are just under 50 cameras in Calderdale
at the moment.
These have been installed on an ad hoc basis,
paid for and maintained under different schemes. New cameras will be installed
over time and in consultation with the Calderdale Community Safety Partnership.
The cameras are currently monitored from an
office at Calderdale College, but the new system will be run from a hi-tech
monitoring centre at a location which, for now, is being kept under wraps.
And instead of the council directly employing
staff to monitor the screens, the job will go to a private security firm.
"Specialists have just started installing the
equipment and we are about to go out to tender with the monitoring contract,
although the system will still be managed by the council," said Mr Thompson.
Most of the cameras already in position in
Calderdale will be kept but some will be upgraded, along with the picture
transmission process.
Mr Thompson said there were no plans at this
stage to use cameras to monitor and fine motorists for flouting parking rules,
which is something councils have been allowed to do from this week under new
legislation. But Geraldine Carter, Calderdale Council's policing spokeswoman,
said: "Having more cameras in o
ur towns should make people feel safer when
they are out and about."
In 2006, security cameras recorded 273
incidents on the streets of Calderdale, including robbery, violence and
vandalism.
Most of those – 216 – took place in Halifax
town centre.
There are 47 public street cameras in
Calderdale at the moment – 20 in Halifax, eight in Brighouse, eight in Elland
and Sowerby Bridge, six in Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd, and five in Todmorden.
Those in Todmorden were installed and paid for
by Todmorden Town Council and cameras in Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd by Hebden
Royd Town Council, which until recently paid the maintenance cost.
