" Foggy weather beats the cameras "
THOUSANDS of speeding motorists escape
prosecution because of driving conditions.
The News can reveal that speed cameras are
failing to catch drivers breaking the limit during torrential downpours or in
fog.
Vehicles on the county's road were snapped
36,000 times travelling over the speed limit by safety cameras, including
average speed cameras along the A14.
But 14,000 of those photographed breaking the
law have escaped a £60 fine and three points on the driver's licence, figures
obtained using the Freedom of Information Act show.
Countless drivers avoided prosecution as
cameras failed to record their number plates during bad weather.
Although police say at least half of them are
emergency vehicles, this still means 7,000 motorists are getting away with
flouting the law.
John Bridge, chief executive of Cambridgeshire
chambers of commerce, said: "It seems weird that in treacherous weather
conditions, when cameras are most needed, they don't work.
"I am also concerned that the average speed
cameras on the A14 are not catching speeding lorries which are only allowed to
do a maximum speed of 50mph, which many clearly are not.
"Is it justice for those who have been fined
for speeding in good weather when drivers are getting away with it when the
weather is bad? I don't think so. This system has to be fair to everyone."
The figures cover the period from April 1,
2006 to March 31, last year.
During that time 36,313 speeding offences were
photographed with 21,893 prosecutions.
Claire Armstrong, a spokeswoman for
anti-speed-camera campaign Safe Speed, condemned the cameras for failing to make
the roads safer. She said: "Whether you are driving in torrential rain or bad
weather you should drive responsibly. Speed cameras are clearly not helping to
make drivers do that."
The figures show speed cameras in the county
have raked in £1,313,000 in fines over the last year.
Police say that between 7,000 and 10,000
vehicles photographed breaking the speed limit were police cars, fire engines
and ambulances.
Other reasons were cited including dirty
number plates and stolen registration plates.
A police spokeswoman said: "About 50 to 75 per
cent of those vehicles that were not issued with a fine were emergency vehicles.
There are many reasons why the rest would not have been fined including
torrential rain or other extreme weather conditions."
