CUMBRIA Police are clamping down on drivers
using illegal number plates as part of a week-long operation.
And one Barrow road user has warned how easy
it is to break the law unintentionally.
Police say criminals involved in serious and
organised crime are increasingly using misrepresented licence plates to confuse
camera systems.
Stylised fonts, altered or moved characters
can confuse cameras which track all car movements around the country.
Police say they are concerned they are being
used deliberately to evade identification.
And otherwise law-abiding drivers are being
warned that they could be breaking the law unintentionally — and be fined up to
£1,000 — if their number plate is not in the standard font or has been altered.
Evening Mail reporter Richard Morris was given
six penalty points and a £30 fine for having a plate with italicised letters. Mr
Morris was stopped on the M6 two weeks ago after picking up his new Mazda MX-5.
He said: “The woman I bought the car from had
put a personalised number plate on with letters in italics, but I was pulled
over on the motorway and given a fine and penalty points.
“It seems that automatic number plate
recognition cameras can’t pick up those kinds of plates and motorists should
beware that their number plates could get them in trouble.”
Cumbria Police’s Operation Larch started
yesterday and is targeted at motorists with illegal number plates in a bid to
disrupt organised crime and gather information about the problem.
Finishing on Sunday, the operation was planned
after it was identified nationally that up to 25 per cent of motorists reported
for number plate offences were reported for the same offence up to a further
four times.
Chief Inspector Mairi Stamper said: “The use
of misrepresented number plates may seem unimportant but they can confuse
cameras and research suggests that they are being used to aid criminality.
“The law states that characters must not be
altered or rearranged, and all number plates fitted after 2001 should be
displayed using a specific font style in specific groupings. With this operation
we hope to disrupt potential serious and organised crime in Cumbria and to
gather intelligence about the scale of the problem.”
Anybody who has number plates that do not
conform to national regulations should replace them immediately or they could
face a £1,000 fine or having their number plates withdrawn.
Rules and regulation governing number plates
depend on the age and type of the vehicle, where the vehicle was imported from
and the available space on the bodywork.
The law states that you must not alter,
rearrange or misinterpret the letters or numbers appearing. Characters must not
be moved from one group to the other and coloured fixing bolts cannot be used to
alter appearance.
