" ITP take first step to make capital roads signal-free "
To make the metropolis a traffic signal-free
city, the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) have planned to place concrete blocks
at various intersections and crossings.
In this connection, concrete blocks have been
placed at Aabpara Chowk on trial basis and suggestions from road-users will be
taken into account, said SSP (Traffic) Zubair Hashmi.
The step has been taken to cope with the
increasing traffic mess in the capital. A campaign will be initiated soon to
create awareness among road-users about how to drive vehicles around these
concrete blocks, the SSP said.
The implementation of the plan is under
consideration as drivers who don’t know about diversions can create a traffic
mess. The traffic coming from right and left will have to take into
consideration concrete blocks for diversion, The SSP (Traffic) said. He added if
the plan ensured smooth flow of traffic, it would be implemented in the capital
with the consent of residents.
In first phase, concrete blocks have been
placed at Aabpara Chowk. Motorists coming from Zero Point will have to divert
from the U-turn ahead of Aabpara Chowk traffic signals for going to Kashmir
Highway. Those coming from Melody Market will have to take a left turn at
Aabpara Chowk and then a diversion from the next U-turn for going to Zero Point.
SSP (Traffic) Muhammad Zubair Hashmi has asked
residents for their comments — whether they support this plan or want some
improvement in it.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP)
will take strict action against owners of vehicles having registration number
plates that are not at par with authorised pattern from today (Wednesday), a
spokesman of the ITP quoting an order issued by SSP (Traffic) Zubair Hashmi
said.
In the order, personnel of the ITP have been
directed to take action against non-pattern number plates, which were not
according to the prescribed format. No relaxation will be given to anyone, the
SSP (Traffic) averred.
A campaign had been initiated one and a half
months ago by the ITP to standardise registration number plates of vehicles in
the city and drivers and car owners had been educated in this regard.
Zubair Hashmi directed the ITP personnel for
taking action against drivers for displaying non-pattern registration number
plates on their vehicles and advised vehicle owners to display number plates
according to the prescribed format.
The SSP (Traffic) also directed that zone
in-charges to submit a comprehensive performance report at the traffic
headquarters mentioning details of action taken against violators.
