- Why
some like 888.....
Numbers are everywhere, and we can’t escape them. However, to
some people, numbers have a greater significance than usual.
SOME of you may scoff at the suggestion of lucky and unlucky numbers. Those who
are weak in mathematics dread dealing with numbers. But punters love all numbers
– especially when they get a strike. Some gamblers are so obsessed with winning
that they dare go to the graveyard to ask for numbers!
Geomancer Thuravi: ‘For auspicious events, dates with the numbers four, five and
eight, or numerals adding up to these numbers, are best avoided.’
We can’t run away from numbers for they are everywhere. Our cars, houses and
handphones all have numbers. We are numbered too; we can’t leave home without
our MyKad.
Some professionals, like accountants and bank officers, deal with numbers all
the time. Others don’t think about numbers until they’re forced to take a number
and wait in line.
Some people take numbers seriously, for good fortune or to avert misfortune.
Even those who are not superstitious think that certain numbers may have an
effect on them.
Hindus avoid the numbers four, five and eight. For auspicious events, dates with
these numbers, or numerals adding up to these numbers, are best avoided, warns
Thuravi, an Indian astrologer in Klang, Selangor.
The number four coincides with Ragu or the planet Uranus. “Four is associated
with legal matters and it is believed that when an activity has started, it has
no ending and hence, does not augur well. So, Hindus try to avoid dates with the
numeral four or numbers that add up to four: four, 13, 22 and 31.”
Five is connected with something continuous with no ending. It is also
associated with changes and is deemed inauspicious. “Marriage should only happen
once in a lifetime. Hence, we don’t want to choose a day, say the fifth day of
the month, because we don’t want an auspicious event like a marriage to have an
unhappy ending,” he says.
Eight is a number linked with “coming and going, and no ending”. This number is
linked to Sani (or the planet Saturn). “Hindus believe that whatever is started
on this day will not have a good ending,” he says.
Eight is also a good number but its effect is akin to a double-edged sword. “The
number is said to be supportive of people who run gambling dens and illegal
activities. The number also signifies sudden luck. It can affect people
differently – for some it can bring about total giving and others, total
damage,” he says.
Nine is a good number.
“The number nine is sevvai or Earth connnected. It is linked to solid
achievement. If you are linked to number nine, you are an achiever but you have
to struggle to reach your goal. The number nine is also associated with numbers
18 and 27 (which adds up to nine),” he says.
Sinologist Lai Kuan Fook: ‘Generally, the Chinese consider even numbers (except
four) auspicious and odd numbers, inauspicious.’
Four months in the Tamil calendar are considered inauspicious: the fourth month
or aadi (July 17 to Aug 17 this year); the sixth month or purattasi (Sept 18 to
Oct 17); the ninth month or maargashi (Dec 17 to Jan 14) and the eleventh month
or maasi (Feb 13 to March 13).
Sinologist Lai Kuan Fook says: “Generally, the Chinese consider even numbers
(except four) auspicious and odd numbers, inauspicious. Six and eight are
favourite numbers as well as nine.”
According to tradition, the Chinese bury the dead on odd-numbered days, which
are reserved for inauspicious events (pak see in Cantonese).
“Most Chinese avoid the number four as it is deemed inauspicious; the
pronunciation for it rhymes with that for death. However, the Shanghainese love
this number. “Perhaps, it’s their pronunciation that gives new meaning to the
number. They say four means water which is associated with money or fortune,”
says Lai.
The fifth, sixth and seventh lunar months (June, July and August) are considered
inauspicious for weddings. In the old days in China, these were the hottest
months and couples avoided getting hitched in the summer to avoid the scorching
sun. Instead, they preferred spring – March, April and May.
Krishna Rajagopal, 26, a chief executive officer who frequently jet-sets,
insisted that he is not superstitious but admits that some numbers do have an
affect on him.
“The Hindus believe that nine is a lucky number. Nine and 108 (which adds up to
nine) are auspicious. But not for me,” he says.
Datin Ramona Suleiman: ‘It’s strange but my offices always end up being on the
fourth floor.’
“The number nine has always been unlucky for me. Almost all bad incidents
happened on dates that add up to nine. I was robbed and lost everything
including my laptop, ticket and passport, in Rotterdam on the ninth (day of the
month)!
“People whom I can get along very well are always associated with birth dates
with the numbers two, three, five, six, seven and eight. On many occasions, when
a meeting or an exam happened to fall on a date associated with the numbers two,
three, five, six, seven and eight, I excelled. Maybe it’s a presumption or the
mind being conditioned to think that way,” he says.
Datin Ramona Suleiman, 53, managing director of Energy Day Spa, says that she is
not a great follower of numbers but certain numbers – four and 10 – seem to
follow her.
“For some people, the numbers 13 and four are not good but it’s up to the
individual,” says Datin Ramona.
Some of her friends don’t mind the number four. “One has a car with 4444 on the
number plate. In fact, he owns a fleet of cars with this number, and he is doing
well,” she says.
“It’s strange but my offices always end up being on the fourth floor,” she says.
In 1986, when she first ventured into property development, her office was on
the fourth floor of Bank Utama Building, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. When she
was in Amoda Building and Lot 10, her offices were, again, on the fourth floor.
Seven is a spiritual number, she says, citing examples like “seven layers of
heaven, seven days a week and seven wonders of the world”.
Her eldest son was born on July 7, 1977. He will be 30 come July 7. She quips:
“Friends thought that I planned to have his birth induced on this day but I
didn’t. I went into labour on July 6 but gave birth to him a day later.”
Muslims do not believe in lucky or unlucky numbers, says Zahra Susihno, 42, a
former bank officer. “I think I heard that God loves the number seven but I
don’t know why. The Quran also mentions the number seven several times. However,
I don’t believe it is a lucky number.”
(A check on the Internet shows that according to Islam, the perfect number is
seven. In Islamic tradition, there are references to seven: heavens, climates,
earths and seas and colours. It is said that the Ka’aba is circumnambulated
seven times, representing the seven attributes of God.)
She has a relative who loves the number eight. “He has luxury cars with the
number plate bearing 8888 because they would be easier to sell off later. Cars
with such number plates also fetch a higher price.”
Volunteer worker J.T. loves No.7, her lucky number.
“Whenever I win at lucky draws during dinners, No.7 crops up. It is in the
ticket number or it’s the seventh prize that I won,” she says.
