" NO-GO ZONE FOR CRIME "
Eight people were arrested and 52 vehicles
seized after officers from seven forces joined together to turn Plymouth into a
no-drive zone for criminals.
Operation Utah involved more than 100 officers
from Devon and Cornwall, Avon and Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Wales,
Dorset, Wiltshire and Gwent police forces, supported by staff from HM Revenue
and Customs, the Environment Agency, Trading Standards, the Department of Work
and Pensions, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, the Home Office and
the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).
Stationed at points across the city, including
Embankment Road, Crownhill, Tamar Bridge and Stonehouse, officers with Automatic
Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) equipment checked up to 3,000 number plates an
hour against various databases.
By the operation's end yesterday eight arrests
had been made for offences including drug possession, driving while
disqualified, possession of ammunition and failing to appear at court. Fifty-two
vehicles had been seized, mainly because their drivers had no insurance or no
driving licence, and around half a dozen inquiries closed involving drivers
using foreign number plates whose cars were snapped by speed cameras. One of
those arrested was a Kosovan man, recently disqualified, whose £80,000 BMW car
was also impounded after he was arrested in Tavistock Road.
Supt Tony Godwin, from Gloucestershire Police,
in charge of the operation, said: "We wanted to break down barriers across the
forces so we could deal effectively with travelling criminals - criminals who
use the road network to go about their business.
"Crime has no boundaries; criminals move
around and operations like this are designed to tackle that."
Nick Keen, an environmental crime officer for
the Environment Agency was among those doing checks.
"Plymouth has had problems with flytipping and
with the closure of Chelson Meadow this problem could increase", he said. "We
look for illegal transportation of waste, making sure it goes to the right
disposal sites."
"Waste dumped illegally damages wildlife and
if on public land costs the council taxpayer money to have it cleaned away. If
it's on private land the landowner's left with the bill."
Sue Whitney, a senior trading standards
officer, said her staff looked for rogue traders who dealt in pirated and
counterfeit goods and were also after bogus self-employed workers, such as
gardeners, roofers and driveway layers, who carried out substandard work or none
at all.
"They're the people who knock on doors, get
the money up front and don't do any work. They charge extortionate prices and
they target the elderly and the vulnerable.
"We provide their details to the police and
their ANPR system."
