SURGEONS are the most likely people to splash out on personalised number plates for their cars.

The finding was made after an insurance firm's study which highlighted examples such as DOC 1 or 5URG EON.

They were followed by oil rig workers, lorry drivers, shopkeepers and company directors.

Among the UK's towns, Aberdeen, Falkirk and Motherwell were the top three places for personalised plates.

Almost three out of 10 cars on Britain's roads carry special registrations.
