" 73 drivers fined in number plate blitz "
POLICE pulled over more than 130 North East
drivers during a blitz on illegal number plates.
The motorists were stopped as part of
Operation Larch, instigated after concerns at the growing use of altered
registration plates.
Roads across Wearside and County Durham were
targeted during the week-long campaign.
The crackdown saw 73 motorists receiving
on-the-spot fines or facing further police action.
Another 45 must get their defective plates
sorted within a fortnight, and cannot use their vehicle on the road until they
do.
Part of the initiative was to crack down on
criminals who alter their cars' details to try to avoid Automatic Number Plate
Recognition technology used by police to flag up problem vehicles.
Traffic officers were also on the lookout for
owners who have personalised their plates to make words – such as using a 1 and
a 3 to make a B – without realizing they are breaking the law.
Traffic chiefs say altered registrations
reduce the effectiveness of speed cameras and can hinder inquiries into crashes,
as altered plates could be hard for witnesses to read and recall.
Of the 62 cars stopped by Northumbria Police,
only three were deemed to warrant further action.
Chief Inspector Kevin Welden said: "Firstly,
the figures show proportionality, and will reassure the public that these
operations were not about stopping everyone with correctly identifiable number
plates.
"Criminals do misrepresent number plates to
avoid detection by police, and whilst this does happen, the figures show that
this does not happen often.
"The 59 people whose number plates did not
comply with the law will receive a letter and be advised as regard to the
offences."
Durham Police stopped 70 vehicles for
suspected offences regarding illegal number plates.
Twenty drivers were handed fixed penalty
notices for serious breaches of the regulations.
A further 45 were given Vehicle Defect
Rectification Scheme notices, which gives them 14 days to have the defect
corrected and provide proof to the police that it has been suitably inspected by
an approved MoT testing station.
The remaining five motorists were given
warnings.
Nationally, police will use the results of
Operation Larch to provide suitable evidence to tighten legislation and justify
changes to penalty levels for number plate offences.
