Private number plates are booming in Wigan, compared to the rest of Greater Manchester.
The status symbols have always been considered the realm of either the very wealthy, who can afford the best ones, or the look-at-me types who contort seemingly impossible number and letter combinations into names.
But it seems Wiganers cannot get enough of them and are second only to the residents of Stockport in owning personalised plates.
The town beats every other borough in Greater Manchester, with 3.6% of registered cars in Wigan boasting number plates along the lines of
K8 TEE or D4 DDY.

However, a survey carried out by insurance company Admiral found that nationally, Wigan comes a long way down the private plate league. Out of 121 towns and cities, Wigan is at number 87, beating Oldham at 102, and Manchester at 106. Bolton is at 107 with just 3% of cars having vanity plates.
The only borough in the region to make the top half of the table is Stockport at 30, with 6.6% of drivers having personalised plates.
Perhaps the most sought-after plate in Wigan must belong to John Martin, director of Wigan Rugby league and former proprietor of the Riverside club – W1 GAN.

John says the plate is his way of showing his pride in the town and, though he would not reveal how the plate cost him, he says he has since been offered double what he paid.
He said: "I'm not going to sell it. I've always been proud to represent Wigan through the rugby and everything else I've done, and it's my way of boasting about the town and being proud about where I come from.
"There is one downside to the plate though – it's so distinctive everyone always knows where I am."

Perhaps Wigan's high number of private plates is down to Leigh bus company owner Jim Stones. At the last count, Jim had 15 personalised numbers on his fleet of vehicles, having bought his first, H1 JYM, in 1990 for £800.
Jim said: "They've proved an excellent gimmick, especially with the kids. Now all 15 of our buses have got a private plate. They're a talking point and our firm has even been used as an example by the DVLA in their advertising."

To promote the company since then Jim has bought many more, including B1 BUS, BUS 1N,
T1 KET, BUS 1S and BUS 1T – which is Jim's favourite.
Jim says the plates are a good money-maker too: "I've got a private plate on my own car, JBS 1, which are my initials. I paid £10,000 for it about five years ago and now it's worth about £25,000.
"Even the ones on the buses will never lose value – they're a great investment."
