" Patriotic number plate fetches premium at auction "
A PATRIOTIC number plate bearing the
registration WEL 5H fetched £27,500 at auction yesterday – nearly 10 times the
reserve price.
The buyer, a Welsh businessman living in
Oxford, will have paid a grand total of £34,400 by the time VAT and other fees
are added on.
The auction at the Celtic Manor in Newport
featured around 1,500 special number plates with many bearing a Welsh
connection.
These include BAN 9OR (Bangor), CLW 7D
(Clwyd), NEA 7H (Neath), and C7 MRU (Cymru) which sold for a “hammer price” of
£5,000.
Previous Welsh-themed number plates that have
gone under the hammer include TAFFY which was sold for £5,000.
The auction was organised by the Driver and
Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and will continue for another two days. The
auction is predicted to raise £4.2m.
The DVLA holds six auctions of DVLA
personalised registrations at locations throughout Great Britain.
There are currently more than 27 million
registrations available to chose from, according to the DVLA website. The
minimum price for a personalised number plate is £250.
Damian Lawson, a marketing manager for the
DVLA, said: “The first day of the auction has gone really well.
“The big one was the WEL 5H number plate which
went to a businessman who wants to remain anonymous.
“He is something of an expat; he lives in
Oxford but he is Welsh and is celebrating Wales winning the Grand Slam by buying
that number plate.
“He was very pleased to land it and said it
was the first time he had spent more than £34,000 before 9am!”
He added: “To be honest we thought it would go
for something like £10,000 so it has gone for a lot more than we expected.
“The reserve was set at £3,000, but sometimes
you have to use a sprat to catch a mackerel.”
However, the WEL 5H plate does not quite match
the £7m paid recently by billionaire businessman Saeed Abdel Ghaffar Khouri for
a car number plate bearing the figure “1”.
Mr Khouri, 25, who bought the special plate at
a charity auction in Abu Dhabi, said: “It is not a lot of money compared to the
size of my family’s fortune. Besides, who doesn’t want to be number one?”
Meanwhile, the most expensive personalised
number plates sold on eBayMotors.co.uk last year included STUD which cost
£14,947, ELV111S, setting its owner back £10,865 and Liverpool footballer Dirk
Kuyt’s K11YTD with a price of £7,174.
Jody Ford, of eBayMotors.co.uk, said: “For
many, it’ll come as no surprise that those counties with the highest population
of footballers and ‘Wags’ (wives and girlfriends) are the UK hotspots for
personalised number plates.
“It just goes to show that as plates become
more affordable, they are becoming more popular.
“For a few thousand pounds you could buy a
one-off registration that gives your car personality and be the envy of all
other drivers on the road.”
