Police have helped more than 200 motorists protect themselves from number plate thefts.
Following four number plate thefts in June in Great Glen, Harborough, the neighbourhood policing team arranged to distribute anti-theft screw packs with the parish council. These make it almost impossible to remove a number plate without breaking it.
Motorists took 247 of the kits at an open day on Saturday (July 24) at the parish council offices.
PCSO Anil Mehta said: “Number plate thefts have risen across the county recently. The theft of a number plate can be a huge inconvenience to a motorist. Once the number plates are stolen, they can also be used to disguise stolen vehicles, conceal the identity of vehicles used in criminal activity such as the theft of petrol from forecourts or ram raiding, and evade fines for traffic offences such as speeding and illegal parking.
“I would advise motorists to report any theft of number plates to the police immediately so that we can investigate the incident and identify any offences committed by vehicles bearing the stolen number plates.”
Anyone with information about number plate thefts should call police on 0116 222 2222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. If you see a theft in progress, call 999.
